In a town hall meeting on Tuesday, President Obama made two separate comments about AARP’s endorsement of health care reform legislation: “We have the AARP onboard because they know this is a good deal for our seniors,” and “AARP would not be endorsing a bill if it was undermining Medicare.”
In fact, AARP has not endorsed the legislation and immediately responded to the President’s comments with the following statement: “Indications that we have endorsed any of the major health care reform bills currently under consideration in Congress are inaccurate.” As a result of this situation, AARP’s position of not endorsing a bill has gained increased prominence, creating a hurdle for the Administration and Democrats in Congress who are trying to engage seniors, as recent polls have shown that seniors are concerned about the impacts of proposed reform legislation.
